Alphabet Verily Life Sciences top exec out

May 9, 2017

Former head of the National Institute of Mental Health Dr. Thomas Insel has left Verily Life Sciences after nearly two years as leader of its mental health research division.

The company announced Insel’s departure in a blog posted Monday on its website and declined to provide any further details.

“We are bidding a fond farewell to Dr. Thomas Insel, who has helped shape our vision and to build a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinical researchers, data scientists, product designers, and software engineers, all passionately committed to rethinking the way we approach diagnosis and care in mental health,” the blog post stated.

Prior to joining Verily, Insel had one of the longest tenures of any director of NIMH, serving in that capacity from 2002 until 2015.

In December 2015 Insel left NIMH to join Verily, which at the time was known as Google Life Sciences division. The company is a subsidiary of Google’s parent firm Alphabet Inc.

Since its launch two years ago, Verily has yet to announce any projects related to mental health and has instead focused on developing other technologies such as an eye lens that will be able to monitor glucose levels. The company is also working a program to develop sterile mosquitoes as a means of eliminating ones carrying vector-borne diseases such as Zika virus and Dengue fever.
