DeVos to reveal school choice plans Monday

May 21, 2017

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is set to reveal the Trump administration’s plans for school choice programs Monday, according to a new report.

DeVos is slated to speak at an Indiana summit hosted by the American Federation for Children, a group that advocates for school choice, Politico reported Thursday.

Multiple sources told Politico that DeVos is preparing an education tax credit scholarship proposal.

DeVos is expected to stress Monday that the administration will allow state flexibility on the issue.

DeVos previously chaired the group and is a longstanding advocate for tax credit scholarships and vouchers.

An AFC spokesman said Thursday that Congress and the administration “have a unique window of opportunity to facilitate a dramatic expansion of parental choice in America.”

“More than 3.5 million children are currently benefiting from charters and private choice programs, while millions more are demanding access to these same options,” Tommy Schultz said in a statement.

“We’re hopeful that Congress and the administration will rise to the occasion and act boldly to help these kids access a school of their parents’ choice.”

DeVos said earlier this month that more information on the administration’s plans for school choice is coming.

“We’ll be seeing something from both the administration and that Congress will consider at some point in the not-too-distant future,” she said in Utah.
